The 5th annual DC Nationals Skateboard Championship kicks off this weekend in cities across Canada. With over 2500 participants expected in the first round this is the biggest skateboard contest of its kind in Canada, possibly the world.

The Local Qualifiers will seek out the top 5 skateboarders to move on to the Regional contests happening next month. The Regional contest will be boiled down to the top 5 skaters of each region who will meet in Montreal, QC on August 25th to vie for the $10,000 cash prize purse and be crowned the 2007 DC National Champion!

Each summer, DC gives back to its roots of skateboarding by hosting the DC National Skateboard Championship. In the summer of 2006, 80 contests ran across Canada with over 2500 participants, all made possible by Canadian DC retailers.

The DC Nationals is a Non-Profit, Canada-Wide skateboard contest and the only event of its kind that gives Canadian amateur skaters a chance to showcase their talent on a national level.

MORGAN SMITH JOINS DC CANADA’S SKATE TEAM

DC Canada is excited to welcome Toronto, Ontario’s Morgan Smith to the skate team.
At the ripe age of 20, Morgan already has an impressive amount of coverage in Canadian and international magazines which have allowed him to trail blaze his way on through the US to gain a factory spot on Blind skateboards and Momentum wheels. Morgan's technical abilities will be a great asset as he joins the global team this summer at the ‘DC King of LA’ (www.dckingof.com) for a month of skating, filming and hanging out.

“I’ve always been skating just trying to learn new stuff, and having fun” says Morgan who will also be on the ‘King of the Road’ tour with the Blind team this summer. Morgan has been filming for an upcoming blind video-“filming for the blind video has been fun, not really that stressful, everyone has tons of good footy, so it will be really good for sure”

June 21 Officially Proclaimed 'Go Skateboarding Day' by U.S. Congress

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif., June 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Throughout history, skateboarders have not been given much recognition, but now they have their own official designated day to go skateboarding! The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) has earned Special Congressional Recognition for their work encouraging young people to get outside and skateboard, and received an official proclamation of June 21 as Go Skateboarding Day. Now in its fourth year, the recognition of Go Skateboarding Day by Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-CA, Orange County) gives skateboarding one more push forward.

"IASC is constantly working to increase the rights of skateboarders and help cities across the U.S. create places where skateboarders are welcome and respected," said John Bernards, IASC Executive Director. "We hope this recognition by Congresswoman Sanchez will give more lawmakers incentive to work with skateboarders in their community and understand that skateboarding is a positive influence on our young people."

Go Skateboarding Day has grown through the efforts of IASC, skateboard retailers, manufacturers and skateboarders taking part in the grind heard around the world. In 2006, more than 350 events took place in 32 countries with an immeasurable number of people taking to the streets on skateboards. The momentum is high, and, based on the massive response, Go Skateboarding Day 2007 promises to break all participation records.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 for X-Box and PlayStation 3

Want to know what's new about Tony Hawk's Project 8, the latest game in Activision and Neversoft's long-running skate series? OK, fine. Just about everything. That's not to say that the same basic ideas that founded the series are history, but many of the core systems and routines that have powered the game for years have been rebuilt from the ground up in order to better take advantage of modern console hardware. Representatives from Activision and Neversoft recently dropped by the GameSpot offices with an early version of the game running on an Xbox 360, and so far, the differences appear to be really interesting.

The premise of the game moves it away from the more rigid, story-driven path of the last few Tony Hawk games and, in a way, returns it to the open-ended, thick-with-goals feel of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. In the game, Tony Hawk is looking to put together a roster of the top eight amateur skaters in the world. Hence, Project 8. You play as a rank-200 nobody who has to claw his or her way up to the top eight. Read more here.....
